Process
Here’s how the LifeMD weight management program works:
- Online Questionnaire: The first step involves a detailed, confidential online questionnaire, where users are asked about their medical history and weight/health goals. This questionnaire determines your eligibility for the GLP-1 program. The medication can clinically be prescribed to individuals with a BMI (body mass index) of over 30 or those 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition. Also, lab tests are required of individuals in the 27 to 30 BMI range if they don’t have an existing weight-related condition like type II diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol. You’ll also be asked about your insurance.
- Sign-Up for a Plan: Once pre-qualified for GLP-1 medication, you can sign up for the subscription plan. You’ll pay your first payment based on the plan.
- Consultation with Provider: The next step in the process is a consultation with a licensed healthcare provider in your state. You can schedule an appointment based on both your availability and the clinician’s. The consultation will be conducted online using a secure connection. The provider may ask questions based on the information provided and will work with you to determine which GLP-1 medication best suits your condition and goals. A government-issued ID and photo will be required before the provider can begin your treatment.
- Insurance Navigation: Once the clinician has prescribed the relevant medication for you, the care team will work with your insurance provider to determine if they cover it. If the insurance doesn’t cover the prescribed medication, or if you don’t have insurance, the team may help find discounts for medication.
- Prescription Fulfillment: LifeMD sends the prescription to your local pharmacy for fulfillment. If a pharmacy isn’t available or doesn’t carry the medication you need, you can also have your medication sent by mail to your doorstep.
Treatment Effectiveness
A study published in The Lancet found that in a 72-week Zepbound achieved an average weight loss of 15% for 5 mg, 19.5% for 10 mg, and 20.9% for 15 mg in adults which participated in that time period.
LifeMD’s weight management program involves prescribing well-known weight reduction injections (GLP-1s) like Ozempic, Zepbound, Wegovy, and Saxenda. They also offer other medications, including Contrave, Metformin, and Orlistat. The medication is self-administered, and instructions are available on the LifeMD website.
LifeMD even offers a money-back guarantee on weight loss if the subscriber doesn’t lose at least 10 percent of their body weight.
Additional Features
Besides the GLP-1 medication prescription, a LifeMD weight management program subscription also includes the following:
- Metabolic Testing: Comprehensive metabolic testing to understand your body’s metabolism and follow a personalized, tailored plan based on the findings. These are at-home metabolism tests that check for hormone levels. Although limited in their scope, these tests can help the practitioner create a tailored prescription program.
- Ongoing Provider Care: The medical practitioner who prescribes the medication will continue to work with you as you begin taking the medication, monitoring your weight changes along the way. They may also adjust the treatment if needed.
Ease of use
The LifeMD platform is available for both desktop and mobile. So, patients can sign up and manage their program through the Android or iOS apps.
The signup process is pretty straightforward, with an intuitive, easy-to-fill questionnaire. You can manage payment and subscription using your account and connect with the consultant or care team member. Overall, it’s a fairly user-friendly telehealth platform.
Post-treatment Support
LifeMD is a subscription-based telehealth service. Services are available as long as you’re subscribed. Unfortunately, they don’t offer support once the treatment has finished.
Once you reach your weight goals, you may choose to unsubscribe or continue your subscription if you still need medication to maintain your weight. Your provider can best guide you in this regard.
Safety
LifeMD adheres to medical regulations like HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) to protect patient data. Furthermore, the healthcare providers in its network throughout the country are board-certified. So, they have the authority and knowledge to prescribe medication that is medically fit for weight loss.
